9. LAHAINA: Changing Times 2006

Lahaina, Maui is a place rich in historical and cultural tradition. Once the home of Hawaiian royalty, the first Capitol of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i and a whaling port, Lahaina’s past century saw the growth of sugar and pineapple plantations and tourism. Now, the end of the plantation era and an increasing reliance on tourism brings new challenges. This 60-minute documentary captures the spirit of Lahaina’s multi-ethnic community, seeking to build a future while honoring their colorful past.

“Eddie Kamae’s popularity as a musical renaissance man and leader of the seminal bandSons of Hawai‘i, has been eclipsed by his appetite for filmmaking and his ability to capture voices of Hawai‘i’s musical and cultural legacies.”
