HAWAIIAN VOICES: Bridging Past to Present (1998)
HSV #1060 - 60 Minutes - Color
Hawai‘i International Film Festival Audience Award Winner
“The films of Eddie Kamae are like no other. His only
subject is his subject, not a demonstration of style. Direct,
heartfelt, unlettered, pure, Kamae’s effect is one of
wry precision.”
—Burl Burlingame, Honolulu Star-Bulletin
This award winning one-hour documentary honors the role of kupuna
(elders) in preserving Hawaiian culture. It focuses on the legacies
of three respected Hawaiian elders whose lives bridged the transition
from older times into the late 20th century. They are Ruth Makaila
Kaholoa‘a, of the Big Island; Lilia Wahinemaika‘i
Hale, of O‘ahu and Molokai; and Reverend David “Kawika”
Ka‘alakea, of Maui. Each is a living archive of invaluable
lore and recollection, a treasure whose stories, memories and
perspectives need to be shared as a way of bringing the healing
wisdom of the past into the often fragmented world of the present.
The SONS OF HAWAII is the only documentary available on DVD.
Other documentaries in the Series will be available in the near
future. Your contribution to The Hawaiian Legacy Foundation can
